Africa is the world’s bridesmaid. Why? because it is the second largest and most populous continent in Africa. Despite those seemingly second-best characteristics, Africa is the largest of the three great southward projections from the main mass of the Earth’s exposed surface.
With this large land mass it is still a wonder why Africa seemingly have meager farm communities and agriculture. Why more and more Africans are becoming hungry and why there are many problems besetting the African agriculture.
The climate of Africa can be classified from tropical to sub arctic on its mountains. Half of it is desert while some part of it can be considered as savanna plains with very dense rain forest region. In between there is also a combination of vegetation patterns such as sahel and steppe dominate.
With this diversity anyone could assume that there are a number of products that Africa could produce and make lots of money with. However, contrary to many assumptions, Africa has a difficulty on making its farm communities grow.
In fact during the second half of the 1990s, cocoa, coffee and cotton provided about 55% of the total agricultural export earnings in sub-Saharan Africa. Such record suggests that Africa has a comparative advantage in producing these crops however they have insufficient resources to enable their farm communities and to specialize on a particular crop production.
With this African countries failed to maintain, or expand, previous agricultural contribution to the world market. Africa has yet to cultivate and improve itself with the many issues hindering its agricultural growth. It has yet to seek the help of first world countries and the United Nations in this endeavor.
