For people who suffer celiac disease and dermatitis herpetiformis, a gluten-free diet is a must. Celiac disease is a digestive disorder which affects both adult and children. It is known to be an inborn disease and a lifelong one. When a person with celiac disease accidentally consumed gluten-laden food, their bodies respond by releasing auto-immune reactions which attack small intestines. It, too, makes it harder for vitamins and minerals to be properly absorbed by the body.

On the other hand, dermatitis herpetiformis or Duhring’s Disease is an allergy induced by gluten consumption. It is a skin condition characterized by intense itching, blisters, and skin eruptions. Health care practitioners have found this condition to have a strong link to Celiac disease.

Aside from the two above-mentioned medical disorders, some people opt to go for a gluten-free diet. Food researchers indicated that while eating grains benefit your body, those with gluten can do more harm than good. It was said that a human body is not capable of fully digesting gluten causing the said protein to rot inside our bodies and leak to the bloodstream—now considered as toxin, since it is unnatural for this substance to be present in blood. It can also cause insulin levels to increase and stirs auto-immune reactions inside the body. Furthermore, a strong link was found between emotional responses and gluten particularly that of ADHD, depression and other mental disorders.

In a nutshell, gluten is a substance primarily found in wheat, rye and barley but it can also be present in some cereal grains. It is a protein substance that comes with starch and is fairly resistant to natural digestion process of the body. To date, there is no existing list of exactly what grains have been found carrying gluten in its composition.

People nowadays are getting more choosy about what to put in their mouths. And this is no wonder since statistics show that people with heart related diseases get younger every year. More and more people are actually realizing that the food you shove inside your mouth has a great impact on our over-all health and well being. So here are a few tips to consider in order to eat healthy.

Always remember to take everything in moderation. Nothing is really bad for us unless we take in too much. Fat for example is bad since it has a lot of cholesterol which can clog our arteries. However our bodies also need a certain amount of fat. Fat is easily converted into energy which is what keeps all of us going. Wine and alcohol is also bad for us since it does not only make us tipsy these drinks also contain a lot of calories. However studies have shown that alcoholic drink like beer actually help in the digestion of food. Wine also contains anti-carcinogens which can help us live longer. So keep in mind that everything you consume should be done in moderation. Chocolates are full of calories and fat but taste good and also contain anti-aging agents. So eat and drink moderately.

If you like fried food then it’s also best to change into a low cholesterol cooking oil like canola. Other cooking oil like coconut contain a lot of HDL which is the bad cholesterol. Oil like canola and olive oil contain cholesterol too but it’s the LDL they contain or the good cholesterol. Certain oil most especially coconut oil can actually contain more HDL than a piece of beef!

A good tip would be to take in as much fruit and vegetables as you can. Fruits and vegetables are good sources of vitamins and minerals not found in meat, plus fruit make good dessert. Fruit and vegetables also contain a lot of fibers which aids in good digestion and also helps the body eliminate waste.

Eating excessively is bad because you are doing your body more harm than good. Eating a balanced diet plus regular exercise can strengthen your body. People say that you are what you eat so in order to be healthy, eat healthy food all the time.

Everybody has taken some health supplement during the course of their life. You take them, I take them. But what are the benefits of health supplements and do they really work?

First of all health supplements are your everyday, common vitamins. These are easily available in most drug stores and can be brought with or without a doctor’s prescription.

Probably the most important reason why we should take our vitamins is because of our lifestyle. Modern man is always on the go. From house to school or work and then work to home again. Our lifestyle has driven us to seek food in fast food joints, junk food, soda and other “instant” food which we can just shove onto our mouths and rush around again. Because of this we do not get the daily recommended amount of vitamins and minerals our body needs in order to maintain its health and condition. This is why multi vitamins or health supplements are most useful. They provide our daily dose of vitamins and minerals.

Vitamins and minerals are important. They boost the immune system which fights off diseases and keeps us in good condition to fight germs. Which is another good reason why we should take health supplements.

They say that “health is wealth” and when you take your vitamins everyday, you are on your way to having a healthier body.

The macrobiotic diet has been around for a long time now as it was popular back then during Hippocrates time. By the way, Hippocrates is the father of Western medicine. Macrobiotic diet was also popular during pre-historic times in China and Japan. Macrobiotic diet is included in the Traditional Chinese Medicine methods. TCM is a group of traditional medical practices developed in China a long time ago and is still recognized today as an alternative healing method for many baffling diseases.

A macrobiotic diet is different from a vegan diet. A vegan diet is exclusively greens while a macrobiotic diet includes some foods from animal sources, although in limited amounts only. In some ways, a vegan diet shares common food staples with macrobiotic diet such as brown rice and beans but their principles are different. Generally, macrobiotics is based on healthy eating practices that were applied before, when artificial and chemical compositions in food are unheard of.

Macrobiotic dieters state that macrobiotic is a way of life and not a diet which focuses on nutritional value of the food they eat. They believe that in order for the body to achieve maximum health levels, everything inside it should be in perfect balance. This means that a dieter should not deprive the body of nourishment but not overeat. Macrobiotics also has set of rules for cooking and what to eat on certain seasons such as spring, summer, fall and winter. You will also have to learn how to do a macrobiotic diet properly, if you are planning to engage with one.

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, barley and oats. Gluten is what binds the dough together during baking. Some people are sensitive to gluten which causes them to react in a different way. These people may have gluten allergies.

Gluten allergy is similar to Celiac disease which can be avoided when staying clear of gluten. It is important to get tested in order to rule out the disease. In gluten allergy limiting the amounts of wheat you consume is okay as long as you do not feel any different. But if you suffer from celiac disease it would be better if you eliminate wheat altogether.

The only way to determine whether you are allergic to gluten is to have a gluten allergy test. Gluten allergy is quite common. Studies indicate that 1 in 167 healthy children and 1 in every 111 adults have gluten allergy.

Symptoms in children include abdominal distension, impaired growth, loss of appetite, abnormal stools and poor muscle tone. Adults who have gluten allergy have diarrhea, lose weight, suffer from abdominal cramps and offensive stools.

There are varieties of oats and barley which have been developed that have low gluten. There are even gluten free oats available in the market to help people with gluten sensitivity cope and manage their allergies. However doctors are still advising patients who suffer from celiac disease or gluten allergies to seek the help of a dietician and nutritionist to be sure that they can cope with their allergies.

Known to the human species as a vegetarian food, as early as 200 years BC, tofu is a highly popular food staple in Asia. Today, it is also cherished by a large number of Americans and can be found commonly in grocery stores throughout the country. Tofu, also called soybean curd or bean curd, is prepared by coagulating soymilk using coagulating agents like magnesium chloride, calcium sulfate, or dilute acids. The resulting curd is compacted by pressing into a block and shaped variously, mostly as small cubes that resemble cheese by their look.

Tofu is regarded as one of the ideal vegetarian diets on account of its protein-rich and cholesterol-free chemistry. It is also low in saturated fat and sodium while containing healthy quantities of iron and the B group of vitamins. Since it is easy to chew and digest, tofu is often the preferred food choice of aging people as well as children in their toddler years. Tofu coagulated by means of calcium sulfate is also considered a good source of dietary calcium. Recently, however, some questions have been raised regarding possible health risks associated with tofu consumption.

The main health concern being investigated in relation to tofu’s consumption is that of breast cancer. Like other soy products, tofu is rich in isoflavones – natural estrogens formed in some plants and, therefore, called phytoestrogens. These natural estrogen-like compounds have similar properties as those of the estrogen hormone found in humans, primarily in women. Since increased estrogen receptors are associated with growth of breast cancer, some researchers in health sciences have questioned the safety of tofu on account of its phytoestrogen content. Another study from Loughborough University in England has found a link between elevated levels of phytoestrogens and the onset of dementia in aging people. The study also points to the possibility of dementia resulting from formaldehyde, used in tofu as a preservative in some places.

The findings of the recent researches, linking breast cancer and dementia to tofu’s intake, are not conclusive and need to be verified by further research. It is also known that the phytoestrogens, found in tofu and other natural soy products, are weak and not likely to create health risks. But the general principle of avoiding overconsumption is certainly worth considering while consuming any food species, including tofu and other soy products. Excess intake of tofu may create health problems in some people, especially elderly individuals with a weaker immune system and women having a family history of breast cancer.

So how much tofu is okay to consume? The FDA approves a maximum of 3 ounces (equal to 85 grams) of tofu per day. Some nutritionists think that taking up to 6 ounces daily is safe. In both cases, it is important to remember that high doses of phytoestrogens packed in soy supplements are not healthy. Tofu made by natural methods, on the contrary, is quite a safe and health-friendly vegetarian food when relished in safe quantities.
